Variables Flashcards
Extraneous variables
Variables other than the iv that has an effect on the dv
Participant variables
Variables relating to the the individual characteristics of each participant that may impact how they respond
Examples of participant variables
Mood , anxiety, intelligence, awareness
Examples of extraneous variables
Age , gender, race, academic background etc
Two types of extraneous variables

Situational variables
Variables relating to things in the environment thst may impact how each participant responds
Examples of situational variables
Temperature of the room, outside noise , weather etc
How fo you reduce ev
- standardisation
- random allocation
- single/ double blind technique
Standardisation
Keeping oarts of the procedure the same so that each participant experiences the same procedure
Random allocation
Participants are picked out of a hat to allocate them to a condition opposed to the experimenter choosing
Single/ double blind technique
The people conducting the test and the participants don’t know what conditions they’re in
Iv

Dv
