Valvular Heart Disease Flashcards
1
Q
What is valvular heart disease?
A
- Stenosis (narrowing) of the valve opening
- Incomplete closure of the value (regurgitation)
- Prolapse of the valve
2
Q
Valvular heart disease is associated with:
A
- Rheumatic fever
- Infection
- Calcification of the valve
- Aging
- Damage from a heart attack
3
Q
Mitral regurgitation/ insufficiency
A
- Blood from the left ventricles flows back into the left atrium
4
Q
Mitral stenosis
A
- Endocarditis
- Annulus calcification
- Narrows d/t fibrosis or calcification
- Greater resistance to blood flow which leads to reduced cardiac output
5
Q
Symptoms of Mitral Stenosis
A
- Right heart failure
- Dyspnea
6
Q
Aortic Insufficiency
A
- Blood back flows into he left ventricle -> FVO -> dilation and hypertrophy over time
7
Q
Symptoms of Aortic Insufficiency
A
- Left sided heart failure
- Pulmonary edema
8
Q
Aortic stenosis
A
- Elevated left ventricle pressure d/t narrowing (stenosis) of the aortic valve
- Added work load (heart needs to beat harder to overcome stenotic valve) causes decreased CO2, Increased O2 demand and ischemia
9
Q
Treatment
A
-Artificial Valve: mechanical, porcine, bovine
10
Q
Risk
A
- CLOT, CLOT, and CLOT
11
Q
Nursing considerations
A
- Coumadin
- INR goal
