Cardiac Tamponade Flashcards
1
Q
What is cardiac Tamponade?
A
- Increase in pressure in the pericardial sac
- 20 to 50 mL of blood/fluid can cause a tamponade
2
Q
Compressing the heart leads to
A
- Impaired filling
2. Reduced CO
3
Q
Cardiac Tamponade etiologies (4)
A
- Trauma (blood)
- Effusion (cancers, infections)
- Drug reactions
- Anything that can change the permeability and let more fluid in
4
Q
Key symptoms of Cardiac Tamponade
A
- Elevated CVP and JVD
- Narrows pulse pressure
- Muffled heart sounds
5
Q
Narrowed pulse pressure
A
- Narrow: low stroke volume (CHF, cariogenic shock, aortic stenosis, tamponade)
6
Q
Wide pulse pressure
A
- Wide: Increased stroke volume (exercise, increased inter cranial pressure, and aortic regurgitation)
7
Q
Diagnostics to cardiac tamponade
A
- EKG low amp QRS
- CXR
- CT
8
Q
Cardiac Tamponade Treatment
A
- Pericardial window: nurse draws fluid out
- Pericardiocentesis: x1 needle aspiration
