to satisfy customers by weighing up the function, cost, aesthetic criteria.
(f = technical performance and reliability)
(c = economic cost of manufacture - how cheap is it to make)

to increase the value at the SAME COST

reduce the cost without REDUCING THE VALUE

A
  • when there is a lot of competition
  • for a product with multiple components i.e. car parts or box of chocolates
  • options of variables
    (engines have to have specific material but extras like wheel trim can use this)
