validity Flashcards
internal validity:
- what goes on within a study
- measure of the extent to which it can be said that the IV causes the change in the DV
- things that can effect the internal validity: investigator effect, demand characteristics, confounding variables, social desirability bias, poorly operationalised behavioural categories
external validity:
- what goes on after the study
- measure of the extent to which results can be generalised beyond the context of the experiment.
types:
- population validity (the extent to which the findings can be generalised to a larger group of people)
- historical/temporal (extent to which findings can be generalised to other historical times and eras)
- ecological (extent to which findings can be generalised to other settings and situations)
assessing validity-face validity:
does the theory appear to be correct? does the study appear to measure what it claims to? does the information make sense, according to common sense, intuition, and other related research.
assessing validity- concurrent validity:
do the results of the scale/measurements concur (agree) with the results of the other scales which are already accepted as valid measures
assessing validity- predictive validity:
the degree to which a test accurately predicts a criterion (behaviour/performance) that will occur in the future
