statistical testing Flashcards
alternative and null hypothesis:
alternative:
- directional has previous research and states the way the direction is going (one tailed)
- no previous research, doesn’t state the way (2 tailed)
null: nothing will happen
levels of measurement:
nominal data- can be put into categories
ordinal data: can be ranked; scores
interval data: scores and data from which you can see the exact difference
unrelated/related data:
unrelated: independent group design
related: repeated measure or matched pairs
Mann Whitney (U):
- test of a difference
- unrelated data
- ordinal data
Wilcoxon (T):
- test of a difference
- related data
ordinal data
Spearman’s rho (rho):
- test of correlation
- ordinal data
Chi- squared:
- test of difference
- nominal data
- unrelated data
Df= (No of rows - 1) x (No of columns -1)
unrelated T-test (T):
- test of difference
- unrelated data
- interval data
Df= (NA + NB) - 2
related T-test (t):
- test of difference
- related data
- interval data
Df= N-1
pearson’s r (r):
- test of correlation
- interval data
Df= N-2
sign test (s):
- test of difference
- related data
- nominal data
S= after subtracting the two numbers write the answers with + or -. Then count up how many pluses and how many minuses. The smallest number is s.
type 1 error:
rejecting the null hypothesis when it should have been accepted ( there was too much error allowed)
type 2 error:
accepting the null hypothesis when it should have been rejected (there was not enough error allowed)
