validity Flashcards
validity
the extent to which results are legitimate
internal validity
whether the outcomes of a study is due to the manipulation of the iv and not any other factor
can be influenced by:
- confounding and extraneous variables
- investigator bias
-confounding variables
external validity
- relates to factors outside the study
types of external validity
temporal validity
-generalisability to other times and generations
ecological
- extent to which findings can be generalised to other settings
Population
- extent to which findings can be generalised to other populations
Ways of assessing validity
Face validity
- this is when a measure is scrutinised to determine whether it measures what it is supposed to
concurrent validity
- extent to which a psychological measure compares to an existing measure
. results should match or be similar
predicative validity
- refers to how well a test can predict future events
Ways of improving validity in
-experimental research
-observations
-questionnaires
-qualitative methods
1 - using a control group - single and double blind studies
2 -covert observations - behavioural categories
3 - anonymous data , incorporate lie scale to asses consistency of answers
4 - triangulation - the use of a number of different sources
