Validity Flashcards
What is validity?
It’s all about accuracy, to the extent to which instruments measure what they actually intend to measure.
What is internal validity?
Refers to the test or measure itself that is being used. Whether the design and conduct of a study are able to support that a causal relationship exists between the independent and dependent variables.
What is external validity?
Issues beyond the investigation. To the extent to which the results of a research study can be applied or generalized to another context.
What is face validity?
Does it look like what it’s intended to measure? Is the measure simply appearing to test what it claims to. Internal validity.
What is criterion validity?
How well one measure predicts the outcome of another measure. Example, if you perform bad on one maths test you should perform bad on them all. Internal validity.
What is concurrent validity?
Whether the results of different tests of the same behaviour produce similar results. Same results across different measures. Internal validity.
What is construct validity?
Whether the test or study measures the actual behaviour it sets out to measure. Are you measuring what you intended to measure? Internal validity.
What is ecological validity?
To the extent to which the results generalise to other settings and places. Realistic behaviour. External validity.
What is population validity?
To the extent to which findings from one sample can be generalised to the target population and wider population. External validity.
