Validity Flashcards
Validity
The extent to which a observed effect is genuine
Internal validity
How much the findings of the method are due to the manipulation of a variable rather than another measure
External validity
- The findings can be generalised beyond the context of the research situation
What are the three types of external validity
- Ecological validity
- Temporal validity
- Population validity
Ecological validity
Extent to which findings from a research study can be generalised to other settings and situations
Temporal validity
Extent to which findings from a research study can be generalised to other historical times and eras
Population validity
The extent to which findings from a research study can be generalised to other cultures/ people outside research
What are the two ways of assessing validity
- Face validity
- Concurrent validity
Face validity
A measure is scrutinise to determine whether it appears to measure what it is supposed to measure
Concurrent validity
Extent to which a psychological measure relates to existing similar measure
Improving validity in experiments
- Use control group
- Standardised procedure
- Blind procedures
Improving validity in questionnaires
- Utilise likert scale
- Promote anonymity
Improving validity in observations
- Covert observation
- Behavioural categories
Improving validity in qualitative research
- Quantitative or Qualitative
- Triangulation
