Case Studies And Content Analysis Flashcards
Cases studies
An in depth investigation, description and analysis of a single individual, group, institution or event
What data do case studies yield and what methods are used
Qualitative- from interviews, observations and questionnaires
Strengths of Case studies (5)
+ Rich, detailed insight into behaviour
+ Preferred method of research as other methods are considered superficial
+ Contribute to topical understanding of conditions
+ Leads to future studies by producing hypothesis
+ Leads to the review of theories- alternative evidence
Limitations of case studies
- Generalising findings is difficult due to small sample
- Information is collected can be seen as subjective due to the interpretation of research
- Accounts from people may be inaccurate, as well as affected by memory decay, menang accounts often lack validity
Content analysis
A research technique that enables the indirect study of behaviour by examining communications that people produced
Coding in content analysis
The stage of content analysis in which the communication to be studied is analysed by identifying each instance of chosen categories
Use of coding to analyse data
- Create chosen categories which could be words, phrases or sentences
- Involves analysing large amounts of data
- Using categories hesp to reduce it down into measurable chunks
Thematic analysis
Inductive and qualitative approach to analysis that improves identifying implicit or explicit ideas within the data
What type of data does thematic analysis produce
Qualitative
Strengths of content analysis
+ Lack ethical issues as consent has been given
+ High external validity
+ Produces quantitative and qualitative data
Limitations of content analysis
- The information is being analysed outside the context it was being used
- Researcher may therefore attribute opinions and motivations that wasn’t actually there
- Lack objectivity
