Probability And Significance Flashcards
Probability
A measure of the likelihood that a particular event will occur where zero indicates just take one possibility and one represent statistical certainty.
Why change the P level
Reduces the change of type 1 and type 2 errors occurring
Significance
How sure we are there a difference or correlation exists
What is the standard level of significance used in psychology
0.05 = 5%
P < 0.05
Critical value
When testing hypothesis the numerical boundary between acceptance and rejection of a null hypothesis
Type 1 error
Accepted the alternative hypothesis and rejected the null hypothesis, when you should have rejected alternative and accepted hypothesis
False positive
Claimed to have found significance but actually don’t
Type 2 error
Accepted the null and rejected the alternative hypothesis, when you should have rejected the null and accepted the alternative hypothesis
False negative
Claimed to have no significance but actually do have significance
Alternative hypothesis
We write a hypothesis starting that we expect to find a difference
Null hypothesis
We also write one at the start of the study in case our results are not significant starting that there will be no difference or correlation
