Valentine Flashcards
“like the careful undressing of love”
Just as the positive side of love can be interpreted to the sexual aspects of love so too removing layers of a relationship can be seen to strengthen the couples bond and relationship
“It will blind you with tears
like a lover”
Just as getting too close to a chopped up onion can bring tears to your eyes So too Duffy is suggesting that relationships can cause pain and make you cry
“Blind” has connotations of being oblivious to something
This shows that the poet is suggesting that we sometimes allow our emotions to come in the way of us realising the bad flaws and negative aspects of an individual we love causing pain in the future.
‘“Platinum loops shrink to a wedding ring”
‘Shrink’ reveals that wedding rings become smaller over time suggesting marriage and love can restrict people physically and emotionally.
“ I give you an onion”
Extended metaphor
compares the onion to love
The onion reveals the complexity of love, it has layers as does a relationship.
“Not a cute card or a kissogram”
The repeated harsh consonant sounds here create a sarcastic tone- she doesn’t see the superficial gifts as truthful or honest
“It’s scent will cling to your fingers”
‘Scent’ suggests when a relationship ends, memories still appear. Meaningful and honest love will outlast false love that’ll just disappear leaving a lingering “scent”
“Possessive and Faithful”
‘Faithful’ suggests a trusting relationship in contrast to ‘possessive’ which suggests jealousy, control and distrust in an unhealthy relationship
