Valence Bond Theory? Flashcards
What is chemical bond?
- Occurs because of overlap by orbital
- One electron is from each
What is hybridization?
-Mathematical procedure in which the standard atomic orbitals are combined to form molecular orbitals
Why do we have hybridize?
- It lowers internal energy of the molecule
2. Allows for orbital overlap that occurs in a chemical bond
What type of hybridization forms from the electron geometry of a tetrahedral?
-sp^3
What type of hybridization forms from the electron geometry of a trigonal planar?
-sp^2
What type of hybridization forms from the electron group of a trigonal bipyramidal?
-sp^3d
What type of hybridization forms from the electron group of a Octahedral?
-sp^3d^2
What is the molecular orbital theory?
-How atomic orbitals form molecular orbitals
What is a sigma bond?
- Hybrid orbital overlaps with another
- i.e. direct overlap
What is a pi bond?
- Unhybridized orbital overlaps with another orbital
- Become parallel
What is linear combination of atomic orbitals?
-Technique used for calculating molecular orbitals
What is bond order?
- Tells us of the stability of the molecule
- The higher the value the more stable the bond
- If the bond order is negative it does not exist
Why does a higher bond order result in a stronger/ more stable bond?
-B/c there are more pi and sigma bonds
What occurs in molecular orbitals with a more electronegative atom?
-The higher electronegative atom properties have precedence in the molecular orbital
