Vulvovagintis/vagintis
Irritation/inflamm of vagina and surroudnings
Dysuria and suprapubic tenderness, missing urgency
Discharge differs in amt, color, odor
Trichomonas Vaginalis
vaginits and NGU; frothy gas discharge and pruritis with petecha (strawberry spots) on cervix (sq epi cells destroyed)
Highly motile protozoa, flagellated trophozoite with no cyst stage, Immunofluorese stain
Tx: metranidozole
Candida Albicans
Causes vaginitis with thick cottage cheese discharge and pruritis
yeast with pseudohyphae, endogenous
Risk- diabetes, immunocomp, antibio overuse
Microscopy: yeast with pseudohyphae, KOH stain or silver, blood assay for beta glycan
Bacterial vaginosis
Perivaginal irritation, lack inflamm with milky discharge and unpleasant odor
Caused by Gardnerella vaginalis
From poor hygiene or anti-b overuse, growth in acidic enviroment
Gram variable pleomorphic rods: wall thin, no capsule
Whiff and Clue tests (vag epi contains pleomorphic bacilli w/in)
