UTI Flashcards
Staph Sapro
Risk factors= recent sexual activity and bacteremia less than 10 to the fifth leads to Acute Urethral syndrome
Catalase +, Coagulase -, gamma hemolytic
Facultative anaerobe and novobiocin resistant
Klebsiella Pneumonia
Causes cystitis and pyelonephritis
Gram neg rod, thick LPS capsule, lactose fermentor, Indole neg
Difficult to tx: R plasmids and chromosomal genes
Fecal contamination of cath
Uropathogenic E Coli
Causes Cyst and pyelo
Gram neg rod, VFs: Fimbrae, flagella, capsule, siderphores, adhesins, sialic acid for invasion, endotoxin (LPS)
Indole +, beta-hemolytic, lactose ferm, oxidase -
Enterococcus Faecalis
Causes cyst and pyelo via cath
Gram pos cocci
Nitrite -, catalase -, Bile ENT +, LAncefield (PYR) group D, facultative anaerobe
Resistant to multi anti gram pos drugs so need 10xMFC
Psudomonas Aeruginosa
Causes cyst and Pyelo
Gram neg rod, exotoxin A (blocks EF2 via ADP ribosylation inhib protein synth), some capsule, biofilms, obligate aerobe
oxidase +, lactose nonferm, indole -
Transmission via soil/water/aerosols (CF pts)
Tx: combo due to efflux pumps
Proteus Spp
Causes cyst and pyelo via cath
Gram neg rod, urease, flagella, endotoxin (LPS)
Indole -, lactose nonferm, oxidase -
Complication= struvite crystals, staghorn calculi
BK virus
Urethral stenosis and nephropathy
dsDNA virus, no envelope, latency in lymphocytes with decoy cells
Immunocomp=risk
