V. Physical Methods of Separating Mixtures Flashcards
Mixtures
Combinations of two or more pure substances that are not combined chemically
Magnets
The separation of mixtures are being done through the use of magnets
What special property do magnets have?
Magnetism
What does magnetism attract?
Iron and steel
Decantation
Works because different
components have different
densities, and the denser
component settles at the bottom
Evaporation
Process used to separate a
dissolved solid from a liquid mixture, the liquid component of the mixture turns into gas due to high temperature, leaving the solid component behind
Filtration
Works because the filter has tiny holes that allow a liquid or gas to pass through while trapping the solid particles
Sublimation
A process where a substance goes
from a solid directly to a gas when
heated, without becoming a liquid
in between
Distillation
A process that uses heat to
separate the components of a mixture based on their different boiling points, the component with the lower boiling point will vaporize first when it reaches its boiling point
Chromatography
A technique used to separate the components of a mixture based on how fast they move through a special paper or column, different components will move at different speeds based on their affinity for the paper and solvent
