UV Flashcards
What is UVI?
Measure of intensity of sun in terms of causing sunburn.
11-12 is extreme - but UK maximum only ~8.
What are Langerhan cells?
part of the skin’s immune system. APCs in skin - UV causes them to present antigens in a bad way.
What is an action spectrum?
plot of efficacy of a given wavelength FOR a particular biological outcome.
If AS for endpoint is a perfect match for absorption spectrum of CHROMOPHORE –> ideal e.g. in photosynthesis.
What have recent studies suggested with regard to sunbed use?
Melanin may act as a sensitizer with UVA to generate CPD.
For triplet-triplet energy transfer in the direct effect, what is the final product spectrum reliant on?
Redox potential of excited photosensitizer as affects selectivity of primary attack.
How is vitamin D formed into its active component?
In skin forms vitamin 2
2 hydroxylation steps in liver, then kidney yield 1,25(OH)2= the active hormone.
What is a potential benefit of UVR?
Reduction in BP.
