What is utility software?
Utility software Designed to help analyse, configure, optimise, or maintaining a computer.
Utility software supports the operating system, unlike the application software that performed tasks for the user.
Types of utility software:Disk Defragmentation
Purpose: to arrange the files on a hard drive to increase efficiency
Function: by putting files into contiguous blocks and minimising empty spaces, disk defragmentation speeds up file access and can improve over all system performance
Types of utility software: compression
This is used when compressing large files to be transmitted across the Internet and is commonly used to compress scanned files
Types of utilities software: antivirus
They are responsible for detecting potential threats to the computer and alerting the user and also remove these threats
Types of utility software: automatic updating
This utility ensures the OS is kept up-to-date, and any updates being automatically installed when the computer is restarted
Updates ensure that the system is less vulnerable to Malware and hacking threats
Types of utilities software: backup
This utility automatically creates copies of specific files selected by the user. How often files are packed up is also specified by the user. This means that in the event of a power failure, malicious attack or any other accident, files can be recovered
