Urinary symptoms

What is the presentation of UTI?
Classic triad= dysuria, frequency, abnormal smell of urine Urgency Cloudy urine Haematuria Suprapubic pain
What is the presentation of UTI in the young?
Systemically unwell- fever, N&V, anorexia, diarrhoea
What is the presentation of UTIs in the elderly?
Wet, wacky, wobbly
Incontinence
Acute confusion
Off of feet
What investigations are done for an uncomplicated UTI?
MSSU dipstick- high nitrates and leucocytes, haematujria common
MSSU culture if haematujria or inconclusive dipstick
What bacterial number is indicative of infection?
10^5
What investigations are done for a complicated UTI?
MSSU dipstick and culture
What are the general management principles for UTI?
Hydration
Analgesia
Antibiotics
What antibiotics are given for an uncomplicated UTI?
3 days trimethoprim/nitrofurantoin
