Uterus Flashcards
Define uterus
It is a child bearing organ in females, situated between bladder and rectum.
Size and shape of uterus
Size 7.5 cm long 5 cm broad and 2.5 thick
Shape is pyriform
It is divided into upper extended part called the body and lower cylindrical part called cervix
Further information on the size and shape of uterus
It is divided into upper extended part called body and lower cylindrical part called fundus
The junction between these two is called the isthmus
The part above the opening of fallopian tubes is called fundus
Cornua of uterus
Superolateral angle of the body projects outwards at the junction between body and fundus.
Normal position and angulation of uterus
Long axis of uterus forms an angle of 90 degrees with long axis of vagina.
Forward tilting of uterus relative to vagina is called anteversion
Backward tilting of uterus relative to vagina is called retroversion
Communications of uterus
Superiorly with fallopian tubes
Inferiorly with vagina
Parts of uterus names
Fundus
Body with 2 surfaces anterior and posterior
Two lateral borders
Cervix
Fundus of uterus
Formation
Location
Shape
Clinical value
Formed by free upper end of uterus
Lies above the opening of uterine tubes
It is convex in shape
The fertilised oocyte is implanted here
Anterior surface of body of uterus
Shape
Relation
Peritoneal relation
It is flat
It is related to bladder
It is covered in peritoneum and forms the posterior wall of uterovesical pouch
Posterior surface of uterus
Shape
Peritoneal relations
It is convex
It is covered with peritoneum and forms the anterior surface of rectouterine pouch
Lateral borders of uterus
Shape
Attachment
Both lateral borders are rounded and convex
Attachment to broad ligament of uterus
Attachment to uterine tubes at its upper end
Attachment to round ligament of uterus at its upper end just below the fallopian tubes
Posteroinferiorly to the tube, to the ligament of ovary
Name the peritoneal ligaments of uterus
Anterior ligament
Posterior ligament
Broad ligament
What is anterior ligament and posterior ligament of uterus
Consists of uterovesicle fold of peritoneum
Consists of rectovaginal fold of peritoneum
Broad ligament of uterus
Relation with uterus
Attachment of ovaries
Between ovary and ovarian lig
Below ovarian lig
Right and left broad ligaments of uterus are peritoneal folds that attach to uterus to the lateral pelvic wall
Ovary is attached to the posterior layer of broad ligament through mesovarium
The part of broad ligament lying between uterine tube and ligament of ovary is called mesosalpinx
Part of broad ligament below the ligament of ovary is called mesometrium
What does the broad ligament of uterus contain
Uterine tubes
Round ligament of uterus
Ligament of ovary
Uterine vessels
Ovarian vessels
Uterovaginal nerve plexus
Ovarian nerve plexus
Epoophoron
Paroophoron
