Duodenum Flashcards
Definition and location
It is the shortest, widest and most flexible part of small intestine. It extends from the pylorus to the duodenojejunal flexure. It is curved around the head of pancreas in the shape of C. It lies above the level of umbilicus opposite the first second and third lumbar vertebrae
Length and parts
It is 25 cm long and divided in 4 parts
First part is 2 inches long
Second part is 3 inches long
Third part is 4 inches long
Fourth part of 1 inch long
Peritoneal relations of duodenum
It is partly covered by peritoneum anteriorly
Course of second part of duodenum
It begins at the superior duodenal flexure
Passes downwards to reach the lower border of third lumbar vertabra where it curves at the inferior duodenal flexure to continues as the third part
Peritoneal relations of duodenum
It is retroperitoneal. Anterior surface is covered with peritoneum
Except at the middle where it is directly in contact of colon
Anterior relations of second part
Right lobe of liver
Trasverse colon
Transverse mesocolon
Small intestine
Posterior relations of second part of duodenum
Anterior surface of right kidney
Right renal vessels
Inferior vena cava
Right psoas major
Medial relations of second part of duodenum
Head of pancreas
Bile duct
Lateral relations of second part of duodenum
Right colic flexure
3 features of interior of second part o duodenum
Major duodenal papilla
Minor duodenal papilla
Plica longitudinalis is present below the major duodenal papilla
Draw diagram of anterior and posterior relations of duodenum
Drawn
Blood supply of duodenum
Upto the level of opening of bile duct it is supplied by superior pancreaticoduodenal artery
Below the level of opening of bile duct it is supplied by inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery
Lymphatic drainage of duodenum
Pancreaticoduodenal nodes
Then
Hepatic nodes
Then coeliac nodes
Clinical of duodenum
First part of duodenum is a common site for peptic ulcers because of direct exposure to acidic contents of stomach
Duodenal carcinoma
