Q

How do you obtain the speed of sound using stationary waves?

A

1) Create a closed end by placing a hollow tube in a measuring cylinder of water
2) Note down the frequency of a chosen tuning fork
3) Tap the tuning fork gently and hold it above the hollow tube
4) Move the tube up and down till you find the shortest distance at which the sound resonates
5) This distance is 1/4 l
6) You know the f and l, so use v=fl
