Module 3.1 - Motion ✓ Flashcards
What is ‘free fall’
Free fall is the motion of an object undergoing the acceleration due to gravity ALONE
How do you resolve the x and y components of a force F?
x = Fcos(θ) y = Fsin(θ)
How do you find:
- Instantaneous Velocity
- Average Velocity
from a displacement/time graph?
Instantaneous - Find the tangent at the point on the graph
Average - Find the change in displacement and divide that by the change in time
What does the area under a velocity time graph give you?
Displacement
How do you calculate stopping distance?
Thinking distance + braking distance = stopping distance
How do you calculate thinking distance?
Thinking distance = speed * reaction time
What are some factors affecting thinking distance?
- Tiredness
- Alcohol
- Distractions
What are some factors affecting breaking distance?
- Reduced braking force due to worn brakes
- Friction between the road surface and tires being reduced by ice, leaves, dirt
Define Velocity
Velocity is the rate of change of an object’s displacement
Define Displacement
Displacement is how far an object has travelled from its starting position
How do you find the displacement from a curved velocity-time graph?
estimate the area under the graph using trapeziums
