Q

What new ways can you extract metals from low grade ores?

A

1) phytomining: harvesting plants and burning them to produce ash that contains metal compounds
2) bioleaching: uses bacteria to produce leachate solutions that contain metal compounds

15
Q

What happens during the Haber Process?

A

The purified gases are passed over a catalyst of iron at a high temperature (about 450°C) and a high pressure (about 200 atmospheres). Some of the hydrogen and nitrogen reacts to form ammonia. The reaction is reversible so some of the ammonia produced breaks down into nitrogen and hydrogen. On cooling, the ammonia lique es and is removed. The remaining hydrogen and nitrogen are recycled.

16
Q

What are the compounds of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium used as?

A

used as fertilisers to improve agricultural productivity. NPK fertilisers contain compounds of all three elements.

17
Q

NPK fertilisers

A

are formulations of various salts containing appropriate percentages of the elements.

18
Q

Ammonia can be used to…

A

manufacture ammonium salts and nitric acid.

19
Q

Potassium chloride, potassium sulfate and phosphate rock are obtained by

A

Mining, but phosphate rock cannot be used directly as a fertiliser.

20
Q

Phosphate rock is treated with…

A

nitric acid or sulfuric acid to produce soluble salts that can be used as fertilisers.
