Using our Resources - C15 Flashcards
what is Low Density polymers
they are polymer chains which are branched randomly and can’t pack closely together
What conditions cause LD polymers
High pressures and oxygen
What is High Density polymers
They are straighter polymer chains and can pack closely together
They are stronger than LD polymers and have a higher softening temperature
What conditions form HD ploymers
High temperature with a catalyst and a slightly raised pressure
What are thermosoftening polymers
They are polymers that soften or melt easily because they have weak intermolecular forces
What are thermosetting polymers
They are polymers that don’t soften or melt because of the cross links between the chains but will char
How is soda glass made
It is made by heating a mixture of sand, limestone and sodium carbonate
How is Borosilicate glass made
It is made when a mixture of sand and boron trioxide is heated
What are the properties of Borosilicate
It has a higher melting temperature than soda glass
What are examples of clay ceramics
pottery and bricks
how are clay ceramics made
By shaping wet clay and then heating them in a furnace
what are the properties of clay ceramics
Hard, brittle, electrical insulators and chemical resistant
What is in clay
Compounds of metals and non metals which form a giant structure made up of layers
What are composites
They are a combination of materials, one acting as a binder which improves the properties of the material
What can ammonia be used to make
nitric acid
