Using Earth's resources Flashcards
Aquifer
A natural underground rock structure which holds groundwater.
Water stress
Where a country or area cannot meet its demand for fresh water.
Water surplus
Where a country or area exceeds its demand for fresh water.
Renewable resource
A resource we can make use of, that will not run out .
Non-renewable resource / Finite resource
A resource that is limited, and could run out one day.
Natural resource
It occurs naturally in the environment, and we can make use out of it.
Food security
People have access, at all times, to enough safe and nutritious food for a healthy and active life.
Food bank
A place which gives out free (donated) food to people who need it.
Fossil fuel
Coal, oil, and natural gas
Fossil water
Groundwater that has been sealed into aquifers for thousands or millions of years, by changes in the surrounding rock.
Mass extinction
When a large number of species die of over a quite short period of time; for example because of an ige age.
Biodiversity
The variety of living things in a place.
Biomass
Plant or animal material used as fuel; for example, wood and waste from farms.
Hydroelectricity
Electricity generated when flowing water spins a turbine.
Solar power
Electricity generated from sunlight, using Photovoltaic (PV) cells.
Hydroponics
Growing plants in water that contains the nutrients they need.
Self-sufficient
The ability of a region or country to produce enough food without needing to buy or import additional food.
Carbon neutral
Adding no carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, overall; If any is being added it is cancelled out by planting trees.
Food insecurity
People do not have access at all times to the food they need.
Trade wars
Where countries try to damage each other’s trade; for example, they may place tariffs on imports from each other.
Tariffs
Taxes on imports or exports.
Habitat
The natural environment of a species; its home.
Sustainable
Can be carried on into the future without doing harm.
Desalination plant
Where sea water is turned into fresh water, by removing its salt.
Environment
Everything around you; air, soil, water, animals, and plants form the natural environment.
Fresh water
Water that is not salty; for example, the water in rivers and springs.
Green electricity
Generated using renewable resources such as wind, waves, and sunlight; no harmful emissions are produced.
Groundwater
Water that collects below ground, when rain trickles through the soil.
Irrigate
To water crops.
Living sustainability
Living in a way that does not harm us humans, other species, or the environment.
PV cell (Photovoltaic cell)
Converts the energy from sunlight into electricity.
Cloud seeding
When planes spray tiny salt crystals into clouds, to encourage water droplets to grow larger, and fall as rain.
