Aquifer?
An natural underground rock structure which holds groundwater.
Water stress?
Where a country or area cannot meet its demand for fresh water.
Water surplus?
Where a country or area exceeds its demand for fresh water.
Poverty?
The state of being poor.
Poverty line?
Where a sum of money is used to define the level of poverty in a country
Inequality?
When wealth and access to services are not shared equally.
Add value?
Process something in a way that increases its value; so you can charge more.
Adult literacy rate?
The % of the population aged 15 and over who can read and write a simple sentence about everyday life.
Arid?
Very dry; receives little or no rain
Bedrock?
The solid rock underlying the soil.
Biodiversity?
The variety of living things in a place.
Biomass?
Plant or animal material used as fuel; for example, wood or waste from farms.
Biome?
A large area with a similar climate, plants ,and animals.
Carbon neutral?
Adding no carbon dioxide to the atmosphere
Cash crop?
A crop you grow for sale.
Climate change?
All aspects of climate are changing because earth is getting warmer.
Climate zone?
A large area with roughly the same climate throughout (so it will have the same vegetation and animals too).
Commodities?
Agricultural produce and natural materials, sold in bulk.
Conflict?
A serious disagreement, which may lead to violence and even war.
Corruption?
Dishonest conduct by people in official positions; for example, they may accept bribes.
Desalination plant?
Where seawater is turned into fresh water, by removing its salt.
Desert?
Gets very little rain; it can be a hot or cold desert, and sandy or rocky.
Development?
A process of change to improve peoples lives.
Developing country?
It’s people are poor, on average, and lack many services.
Development indicator?
A piece of data that helps to show how developed a country is.
Diversify?
Develop a wider range; for example, more ways to earn income.
Earthquake?
The shaking of earth’s crust, caused by sudden rock movement.
Economic?
About money, jobs, and business
Economic migrant?
A person who moves in order to find paid work, or earn more.
Economy?
All the activities going on in a country, in producing, buying, selling, and distributing goods and services.
Emerging economy?
It’s development is speeding up, usually because of industry.
Employment?
The state of having paid work.
Employment structure?
The % of the workforce in each sector; primary, secondary, and tertiary.
Environment?
Everything around you; air, soil, water, animals, and plants form the natural environment.
Exclave?
Part of a country cut off from the main part; you pass through another country (or countries) to reach it.
Export?
Sell things to other countries.
Extreme poverty?
Where people have less than $1.90 a day to live on; this figure is set by the world bank, and can change.
