Using a potometer Flashcards
Briefly outline a method to use a potometer
1) Cut shoot underwater to avoid air bubbles
2) Allow apparatus to stabilise for 10 minutes to adapt to new conditions
3) Place potometer and leafy shoot in position
4) Measure the position of the meniscus over a set time period
5) Repeat in different conditions
What graph should be plotted?
Time (minutes) against volume of water (ml)
What precautions should be taken when carrying out this experiment?
Cut stem underwater to prevent air bubbles from forming
Air bubbles would affect the pressure
What is a potometer?
A device used to measure the rate of transpiration of a plant
What different environments could be used?
Light Humidity Dark Hot air Air movement (cold)
Control variables?
Type/size of shoot
Number of leaves
Type of potometer
