uses of metals Flashcards
what is aluminium used for
overhead electricity cables (with a steel core strength)
cooking foil, food containers and drink cans
aircraft
what are the properties that make aluminium suitable for these uses
a good conductor of electricity, low density (light), ductile, resist corrosion
low density, non-toxic, resist heat and corrosion, can be rolled into thin sheets
low density, resists corrosion
what is copper used for
electrical wiring
pipes for the water supply inside homes
what properties make copper suitable for these uses
one of the best conductors of electricity, ductile
malleable (so pipes are easy to bend), does not radily corrode, non-toxic
what are the uses of zinc
coating or galvanising iron and steel
for torch batteries
what properties make zinc suitable for these uses
prevents rusting through sacrificial protection and also by keeping air and moisture out
gives a current when connected to a carbon electrode in a paste of electrolyte
