Use of Color in Thematic Maps (Cartographic Design) Flashcards
Hue
name given to colors we can perceive (red yellow blue)
Value
Lightness or quality of lightness/darkness of colors
Chroma
Saturation, intensity or purity of color
of hues that cannot be exceeded in one map
12
RGB Model
Based on intensity of Red, green, and blue
CMYB
based on intensity of Cyan, Magenta, and yellow
HSV Model
Works directly with hue, saturation, and value
Use of colors in Qualitative maps
Use of separate hue’s to show there is no order
Cartographic color convention:
- )Blue:
- ) Red:
- ) Yellow/Tan
- )Green
- ) Brown
- ) Water or cool temps
- ) Warm Temps
- ) Dry or little vegetation
- ) Abundant vegetation
- ) Land surfaces or contour lines
Quantitative Single Hue data
Darker colors show higher values
Quantitative Color Covention
sequential(darker is higher)
Part spectral plan(uses colors that are opposite on color wheel)
Full spectral plan(Seperate hues to show higher data)
Diverging color scheme(D, L, W, L, D)
Red is heavier than yellow
Red is also heavier than blue
