Usability Flashcards
Usability
How easy a product is to use, how clear and obvious th functions are
The impact of a solution on a user’s lifestyle
- a well designed product can make a user’s lifestyle easier or more time efficient
- a badly designed product could lead to discomfort/ injury
What is important to consider when designing a product - ensuring ease?
Ease of use and inclusivity
Inclusive design
Involves designing products in such a way that they are easy to use by as many people as possible
What should a designer have in mind when designing?
The widest possible user group
Factors to consider when assessing inclusivity
- signage (understood using words?)
- lighting (suit for blind?)
- visual contrast (defined edges, clarity of design)
- material (texture, performance)
- function (does it do the job?)
- interface (easy to use/ understand)
- intellectual access (accessed by different intellects?)
- emotional well being (supportive of it?)
An inclusive design should be…
- inclusive-> everyone use safely, easily
- responsive -> taking into account needs and wants of people
- flexible -> different people can use it differently
- convenient -> can everyone use it with little effort
- accommodating -> all people regardless age gender, mobility, ethnicity, circumstance should be able to use it
- welcoming -> no barriers that will exclude anybody
- realistic -> offer more than one solution to help balance everyone’s needs
responsive
taking into account needs and wants of people
inclusive
So everyone use safely, easily
flexible
different people can use it differently
convenient
Can everyone use it with little effort
Accommodating
all people regardless age gender, mobility, ethnicity, circumstance should be able to use it
Welcoming
no barriers that will exclude anybody
realistic
offer more than one solution to help balance everyone’s needs
Ergonomics
The study of how we use and interact with a product or system
Anthropometrics
The study of the sizes of the human body
Anthropometric data
Used by designers to help ensure product is easy to use for all of the potential users
Ergonomic considerations
What environment will it be in?
How do people use it?
What size, shape or weight should it be?
Can people understand it?
Aesthetic
Factors concerned with the appreciation of beauty- this can include how something looks, feels, tastes and smells
As well as considering the ease , designers also have to consider whether it is aesthetically pleasing. What things influence on a user/ stakeholder’s opinion?
Form Texture Scale Colour Symmetry
Colour
Important consideration -certain colours provoke different reactions + and -
Colour association can help a designer make the best choice for the response they are opting to create
Folder ratio
A common mathematical ratio found in nature that can be used to create pleasing, natural-looking designs
Often found in nature - thought it result in designs that are aesthetically pleasing and natural looking
