a political movement to advance the human condition through social reform based on advancements in science, technology, economic development, and social organization. It was important in US history because it worked to make American society a better and safer place in which to live.
Progressivism
A political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups.
Populism
An Amendment that stated, “The Congress shall have the power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.” This mattered in US History because it built up the powerful federal government by making it possible to enact a modern nationwide income tax.
16th Amendment
And amendment that allowed voters to cast direct votes for U.S. senators. This mattered in US hIstory because it allowed the people to have the main say in voting, instead of someone just choosing for them.
17th Amendment
An Amendment that prohibited the making, transporting, and selling of alcoholic beverages. This caused many people to rebel against the government, and caused many people to travel around the world just to get alcohol.
18th Amendement
believed that women should have the right to vote and to hold public office. This positively affected women, but had many men turn against the idea of women even having a say in it.
19th Amendment Tarbell
an american oil production, transportation, refining, and marketing company, founded by John D. Rockefeller. It positively affected the economy because it helped build railroads, ships, and oil production.
Standard Oil
26th President of the US (1901-1909). He was a progressivism believer, so he led the Congress and American Public towards progressive beliefs.
Theodore Roosevelt
Founded in 1905
Us Forest Service
the act of consciously and efficiently using land and/or its natural resources. This was important because it put an end to wasteful use of raw materials, and the reclamation of large areas of neglected land.
Conservation
a Danish-American Journalist and Photographer. He contributed to the cause of urban reform in America at the turn of the twentieth century.
Jacob Riis
an American writer, muckraker, political activist and the 1934 Democratic Party nominee for Governor of California who wrote nearly 100 books
