Industrialization and with it the large influx of new employment opportunities drove many Americans to cities for work as well as a large population spike with immigrants heavily contributing to it.
Causes of Urbanization
It led to rapid infrastructure expansion with a lot of new jobs due to factories but at the same time it led to mass pollution and bad working conditions.
Impacts of Urbanization
Political Machines in Cities
Blended ideas of German socialism and American Progressivisim. It explained that people could make society “the kingdom of God”.
Social Gospel
A settlement house in Chicago. Over time, Hull house grew to be 13 buildings
Hull House
A leading figure in the settlement house movement. Opened the Hull House.
Jane Addams
Believed in “survival of the fittest”—the idea that certain people become powerful in society because they are innately better. It was used to justify racism, imperialism, and social inequality.
Social Darwinsim
A community center that provided social services to the urban poor. Workers gave mothers classes to teach English to immigrants. It greatly affected the treatment of immigrants.
Settlement House
Prohibiting all immigration of Chinese laborers for 10 years
Chinese Exclusion
Established the nation’s first numerical limits on the number of immigrants who could enter the United States.
Quota Act of 1921
Limited the number of immigrants allowed entry into the United States through a national origins quota.
National Origins Acts of 1924
The inventor of the first ever telephone. He changed society and the economy of communication.
