The US healthcare system is unique
market based system (governed by laws of supply and demand), no single point of accountability (individual or organization) that is in charge of the system
4 Goals of HCS
- Quality of Life: people seeks medical care in emergence to life, be healthy, live healthy life
- System Performance: when people need care it is available, of fair cost, and can respond to new or emerging challenges
- Cost benefits: does the cost of care reflect in the benefits that the patients are receiving
- Reducing Structural Flaws: financing
Quality Care has Six Elements
safe, effective, patients, timely, efficient, equitable
4 Main Problems of HCS
- Cost of care: 4,500,000,000,000 spent on the healthcare system
- Access to coverage and care: is difficult for many working class and vulnerable populations
- Quality and Accountability: are inconsistent and poorly measured
- Racial and Economic disparities: are increasing, as are the # of vulnerable populations
Components of Healthcare Systems

physicians, nurses, various -ist (density, pharmacist, ophthalmologist)
Purpose of Insurance
A mean of protection against finanical lost
US healthcare system is a multiparty system that finances the cost of care
Private- employer: sponsored, individual markets, health saving account
public- medicare, medicaid, SCHIP, Tricare, IHS
In 2019 56% of Americans were covered through private payer plans
Target particular populations because high healthcare needs and low socioeconomic status
- medicare: elderly, disabled, end-stage renal disease
- medicaid: low-income individuals/ families
- SCHIP: states children’s health insurance program
- veterans administration: veterans
- department of defense TRICARE: military personnel and their dependents
- IHS: Indian health services: Native Americans
10% of Americans are uninsured, rates higher among racial and ethnic minorities
