Characteristics of Mental Disorders
- persistant
- occur frequently. daily
- causing disability/ dysfunction
- not caused by substance use disorder or other mental conditions
Mental Health on a Continuum
crisis (very anxious), struggling (anxious), surviving (worried/nervous), thriving (positive/calm), excelling (full potential)
mental promotion is also on a continuum
prevention, treatment, continuing care
barriers to mental health
lack of insurance, mental health sitgma, lack of diversity within healthcare providers, distrust in health care system, inadequate support for mental health service in safely net setting- CAN OCCUR @ ANY SOCIOECOLOGICAL MODEL
mental health disparities
- disparities between attention given to mental health and given to other public health issues
- disparities between the health of persons with mental illness as compared to these without
- disparities between populations with respect to mental health and the quality, accessibility, and outcomes
disproportionally affects racial and ethnic minorities
often bear a disproportionately high burden of disability resulting from mental disorder
native Americans: higher rate of PTSD and alcohol dependence than any other ethnic/ racial group
lack of cultural understandings may contribute to under/misdiagnosis of mental illness
