What happened in the 7 year war?
England declares war on France to get their territories in America. Indians defend the French.
What pre-existing conditions did the colonies have that made them successful after independence?
- Self-government
- Enlightenment
- Educated rebels
- Strong economy
- Quick recognition (loans, trade, no invasions, good army)
Results of the 7 year war?
- England wins and France loses
- England has a debt so they tax americans (Stamp Act).
- France also loses money. Gets angry, seeks revenge. The bankruptcy is one of the causes of the revolution.
- England gets control over India.
What was the Stamp Act?
They were taxes in order to pay for the 7 year war. Americans got angry because it wasn’t even a war for them and they wanted representation in the english government. “No taxation without representation!”
What was the Boston Tea party?
A protest because the English taxed the tea. East Indies trading co. sells cheaper tea. People can’t buy tea from other merchants.
What happens in the 1st Continental Congress?
There are meetings in Philadelphia. They send the king a letter of what happened in Boston. King sends soldiers. Battle of lexington.
What happens in the 2nd Continental Congress?
The war is recognized and they name George Washington general.
What happens on the 3rd Continental Congress?
They declare independence. Take ideas from the enlightenment to rule (Locke, Montesquieu, democracy).
Write a constitution (organizes country, rights and obligations, some laws can be changed) and a bill of rights (protects
people).
What is the main idea of the Manifest Destiny?
Americans wanted a country spanning from the Atlantic ocean to the pacific ocean. They wanted territory from the west (Mexico).
What is the main idea of the Monroe Doctrine?
That they should protect Latin America from Europe.
What is american imperialism?
To exercise control through the threat of military intervention in Latin america.
How did the U.S get Texas and California?
Texas wanted independence to have slaves. They become an independent country. James Polk wanted Mexican territory. California was very rich.
The Mexican-American war happens, and the americans win.
Cuba
Successful wars against Spain us gets political control of Cuba.
Native americans
Americans want to expand to the west where indians are. Both cultures are very different an americans reealize they can’t live in peace together. So they ask them to move to preservations (indian removal act) . Forced cherokees to move to Oregon and almost all of them die.
Slavery
- It was necessary for economic activity in the south.
- It was seen as immoral and un christian in the north.
- The northern states opposed expansion, hoping to contain slavery in its original states to end it.
- Lincoln stops slavery
