define urticaria?
A
Itchy, red, blotchy rash resulting from swelling of the superficial part of the skin
also known as hives

what are the risk factors of urticaria?
A
• Caused by activation of mast cells in the skin, resulting in the release of histamines

A
- Allergies
- Viral infections
- Skin contact with chemicals
- Physical stimuli

triggers for chronic urticaria?
A
- Medication (aspirin, penicillin, NSAIDs, opiates)
- Stress
- infections
- Autoimmune

presenting symptoms of urticaria?
A
- Central itchy white papule surrounded by erythematous flare
- May be associated with angioedema

how long will urticaria last?
A
o Acute - symptoms develop quickly but normally resolve within 48 hrs
o Chronic - rash persists for > 6 weeks
