kidney cancer- prognosis if metastasized
not diagnosed until metastasized
renal cell carcinoma clinical manifestations and treatment
no early s/s
late: CVA tenderness, hematuria, palpable abdominal mass
metastasized to lung/bone? s/s related to lung/bone
resistant to traditional chemo- requires surgery
required to remove kidney “-ectomy”
bladder cancer
4th most common cancer in men
AKA urothelial carcinoma
RF of bladder cancer
smoking
male
occupations with exposure to toxins
low fluid intake
clinical manifestations of bladder cancer
pink/red- hematuria (early)
frequency/urgency/dysuria (later)
chemotherapy for bladder cancer depends on the stage
stage 1- intravesical chemo
advanced stages- systemic chemo
intravesical therapy- BCG vaccine
time: 6-12 weeks
moa: stimulates a local inflammation response
AE: bladder irritation, risk of systemic infection
PT instructions:
1. empty bladder
2. dwell time 2 hours
3. change positions Q15 minutes
safety: disinfect urine with bleach 6 hours after treatment, don’t give to AI compromised patients, patient should avoid AI compromised during therapy
