what is an uncomplicated UTI?
a UTI without anything that makes it complicated
what are somethings that make a UTI complicated?
associated w/ an underlying condition that increases risk of failing tx
DM, PG, hospital acquired infection
symptoms for 7 or more days before seeking care
renal failure, urinary obstruction
presence of an indwelling urethral catheter, stent, nephrostomy tube
functional/anatomic abnormality of the urinary tract
hx of UTI in childhool
renal transplant, immunosuppresion
what is asymptomatic bateriuria?
isolation of a specified quantitative count of bacteria in an appropriately collected urine specifimen from an individual without S/S of a UTI
what are some S/S of UTI?
fatigue
“mom’s just not herself”
forgetfulness, confusion, disorientation
unsteady on feet
foul smelling/cloudy urine
elevated Cr/ acute renal failure
what 2 things indicate contamination on a UA?
squamous cells
mucus
what is most predictive of an acutal UTI?
nitrites
what do we always need to make sure about a urine culture & sensitivity?
always make sure one is cooking
for a urine culture, when should preliminary results be available?
about 12-24 hours
what is a sensitivity report and how long does it take to get results?
tells you which drugs can kill your isolated bug(s)
returns about 48-72 hours
what is the recommended therapy for complicated UTI?
flouroquinolone
cipro or levaquin
