in-patient
admit them & expect them to stay a while (> 48 hrs)
*if they don’t stay 48 hrs, you must document that you were suprised the patient got rapidly better*
observation stay
expect patient will go home in < 48 hours
outpatient in a bed (OPIB)
patient w/ a known diagnosis enters hospital for specific minor surgical procedure or other tx that is expected to keep them in the hospital for < 24 hrs
general inpatient (GIP)
used for hospice patients who can’t be managed in home hospital because of symptoms (pain, vomiting)
When rounding in the hospital, how is the flow prioritized?
sickest → discharges → admissions → stable
What do we need to consider when discharging a patient from the hospital?
where will the patient go?
family dynamics
environmental factors (weather, home situation)
