characteristics of UTI
infection of the urethra, bladder or kidney. most commonly is an ascending infection. there is an increased incidence in females.
what are the risk factors for UTI?
sexual intercourse, urinary stasis, catheters.
cystitis characteristics
infection of the bladder.
how does cystitis present?
dysuria, urinary frequency, urgency, suprapubic pain. systemic signs are typically absent.
lab findings for cystitis
urinalysis typically cloudy, > 10 WBC/HPF. dipstick will have positive leukocyte esterase, and nitrites.
what is the gold standard for cystitis diagnosis>
greater than 100,000 colony forming units.
what is the most common etiology for cystitis?
E. coli > 80%
other etiology for cystitis
sprophyticus, klebsiella, proteus and fecalis.
pyelonephritis characterisitics
infection of the kidney. usually an ascending infection. increased risk with vesicouretal reflux.
how does pyelonephritis present?
fever, flank pain, WBC casts, leukocytosis and cystitis symptoms (suprapubic pain, cloudy cultures, dysuria, frequency, urgency).
