Urinary System Function, Assessment, and Therapeutic Measures Flashcards
1
Q
Kidney
A
- Located just below the diaphragm on each side of vertebral column
- Dark, red bean shaped
- 4-5 inches long and 2-3 inches wide and 1 inch thick
2
Q
Normal urine output is …?
A
1500 mL/day
3
Q
Major functions of the kidney
A
- Urine formation (glomerular filtration & tubular re-absoprtion; 1000-1200 mL/day)
- F&E control (by excretion, secretion, and re-absorption)
- Acid-base balance (mainitain pH of 7.35-7.45 by excreting H+ ions and forming bicarb)
- Blood pressure regulation (controls circulating volume and renin secretion)
- RBC production (secretes erythropoietin)
- Regulation of calcium-phosphorous metabolism (regulates activation of vitamin D)
4
Q
About how much water is lost in respirations?
A
300 mLs
5
Q
About how much water is lost in bowels?
A
200 mL
6
Q
About how much water is lost in urine?
A
1500 mL
7
Q
Renal corpsucle
A
- Tuff of capillaries between the afferent and efferent arterioles
- Each tuff is enclosed within Bowman’s capsule
8
Q
Glomerulus function
A
Selevtive filtration
9
Q
Proximal tubule function
A
80% absorption of electrolytes and H2O, reabsorption of glucose, amino acids, K+, bicarbonate, Cl, Ca+, and HCO3
10
Q
Loop of Henle function
A
- Reabsorption of Na+, Cl, H2O
- Dilution or concentration of urine
11
Q
Distal tubule functions
A
-Where ADH works to hold onto H20
