Baby Heart Flashcards
1
Q
The fetal circulation is a ________ circulation seen only in the fetus
A
Temporary
2
Q
The fetal circulation consists of ?
A
3 seperate vessels:
- 1 single umbilical vein that carries nutrients and O2 blood to the fetus from the placenta
- 2 umbilical arteries that carry CO2 and waste in the blood from the fetus to the placenta
3
Q
Atrial septal defect
A
- Abnormal connection between the atria
- Blood flows from L to R atria accross the atrial septal defect
- Can lead to an increase volume on R side of heart with an increase in atrial and ventricular size
4
Q
Ventricular septal defect
A
- Abnormal connection between ventricles
- Most common congenital heart defect
- Blood recirculates through the pulmonary system
- Can lead to pulmonary congeston/edema and R. ventricle enlarges
5
Q
Patent ductus arteriosus
A
- Direct connection between main pulmonary artery and the aorta
- Necessary for fetus/utero to survive; circulation is supposed to settles out when born. High pressure aorta flows directly back to low pressure of pulmonary artery
- Can lead to CHF
6
Q
Truncus arteriosus
A
-Failure of embyonic trunk to divide into pulmonary arteries and aorta
7
Q
Tetralogy of Fallot
A
Made up of 4 congenital defects: (very serious) -VSD -Pulmonary stenosis -R. Ventricular hypertrophy -Overriding aorta (blood is recieved from both ventricles)
8
Q
Coarctation of the aorta
A
Narrowing located in the thoracic aorta
