Describe the 3 broad causes for azotemia and how to differentiate between them
A
- Pre-renal: dehydration or hypovolemia, urine should be concentrated
- Renal: AKI or CKD, 75% nephron loss to see azotemia. Urine may be isosthenuric or inadequately concentrated
- Post-renal: lower urinary tract obstruction, rupture. Variable USG with oliguria, anuria, straining to urinate and high level of hyperkalemia

AKI: acute onset, very sick w/mild azotemia, not anemic, good BCS, enlarged and painful kidneys
CKD: insiduous onset, often quite stable, anemic, muscle wasting, small irregular kidneys
