Urinary Elimination Flashcards

1
Q

What influence do the kidneys have on urination?

A

-filter blood
-normal urine output is 1200-1600mL /24 hours
-<30mL/hr x2 hours is renal alteration
-if you decrease blood flow to kidneys this will decrease urinary output

Q

What is renal colic?

A

severe sudden flank pain secondary to obstruction of the urinary tract usually by a kidney stone– caused by the peristaltic waves of the ureters trying to move the obstruction

8
Q

What is specific gravity?

A

the kidney’s ability to concentrate urine, the higher the number the more concentrated/dehydrated

Q

What can cause glucose in the urine?

A

normal for adults to excrete some small amounts but a high amount can indicate a problem with either the kidneys or blood sugar

Q

What can cause protein in the urine?

A

leaky glomerulonephritis can allow proteins to escape (usually too big), low levels are normal and large amounts can indicate kidney problems

16
Q

What can cause bilirubin in the urine?

A

can indicate liver damage or disease

17
Q

What can cause leukocytes in the urine?

A

infection

18
Q

What can cause bacteria in the urine?

A

infection

19
Q

What can cause blood in the urine?

A

may be a sign of UTI, kidney damage, infection, kidney or bladder stones, kidney or bladder cancer, or blood disorders

20
Q

Define acute urinary retention

A

total inability to pass urine via micturition (urination)– can be a medical emergency

21
Q

Define chronic urinary retention

A

incomplete bladder emptying despite urination

22
Q

Describe routine urinalysis

A

-requires a clean voided specimen without stool or toilet paper
-can be collected in hat, urinal, or container
-ideal to obtain 30-60mL

23
Q

Describe midstream urine collection

A

-ordered to determine the presence and type of mircoorganisms and their sensitivity to which antibiotics
-client needs to wash and dry genitals beforehand with soap and water or antiseptic to clean meatus
-place during stream to catch sample
-sample needs to be sent to lab immediately or be refrigerated
-5-10mL

24
Q

How is a Coude catheter different from a regular one?

A

it has a curved tip and is stiff to enable maneuvering around enlarged prostate

25
Q

Why is the balloon of a catheter inflated using sterile water and not saline?

A

saline may crystallize resulting in incomplete deflation of balloon at removal time

26
Q

When should you empty a catheter bag?

A

when it is 1/2 full or less

27
Q

What is suprapubic catheterization?

A

-used for urinary diversion
-catheter is placed through abdominal wall and sutured into place
-less risk of UTI

28
Q

What are nephrostomy tubes?

A

-where the catheter is inserted directly into renal pelvis and attached to connecting tubing for drainage
-used to temporarily preserve renal function during a ureter obstruction

29
Q

What is urinary irrigation?

A

-a flushing or washing out with an ordered solution
-requires sterile technique
-open or closed (intermittent or continuous) method
-can be used to wash out bladder, administer medication, or remove blood clots

30
Q

What should you do if the returns are bright red during catheter irrigation?

A

bright red– increase the rate of irrigation

pink– good speed of irrigation
