What does “parenteral medication” refer to?
medications that require a break in the skin– ex. administration of a medication by injection
Which parts of a syringe need to remain sterile and which don’t?
Don’t: the barrel, the flange, and the end of the plunger
Do need to be sterile: syringe tip and stem of plunger
What is the size of a needle referring to?
length in inches
What is the difference between a blunt fill needle and a blunt filter needle?
both are for drawing up meds but the blunt filter is for drawing from a glass ampoule
What are the things to remember about drawing up from a vial?
-swab prior to every entry
-equalize the pressure
What do basal and bolus refer to?
basal– blood glucose baseline
bolus– blood glucose spike (after eating)
