What is the procedure for insertion of the catheter for the female?

A

Remove clean gloves
Opens sterile kit /catheter.
Puts on sterile gloves.
Slides sterile drape under client’s
Buttocks with shiny side down, folding corners of drape over sterile gloves
Applies fenestrated drape
Opens antiseptic solution/Swabs
(Order of this varies depending upon manufacturer)
Lubricates tip of catheter
(1-2 inches female, and 5-7
inches male.)
Female:
Separates client’s labia minora with non-dominant hand.
Using sterile forceps picks up
cotton ball (swab) and cleanses
one side of the labia minora. Use a new swab for other side. Use last swab to clean directly over the meatus.
With sterile hand picks up lubricated catheter approximately 3 inches from tip, ask patient to bear down gently and gently inserts catheter 2-3 inches for females or until urine flows.

A

Firmly grasp penis with non-
 dominant hand just below glans
Spread the meatus between the 
  thumb and forefinger.
Cleanse meatus and then wipe 
  the tissue surrounding the meatus
  in a circular motion around the glans
Repeat two more times
With sterile hand picks up lubricated catheter approximately 3 inches from tip, ask patient to bear down as if to void and gently inserts catheter 8 inches for males or until urine flows.
