Oxygenation and Incentive Spirometer Flashcards
What is the assessment that is done for the critical thinking?
-respiratory status, congested cough ABGs, O2 stat: lab draw, pulse OX
What is the highest FIO2, flow rate, and amount of air used for nasal cannula?
highest FIO2: 44%
flow rate: up to 6L
we humidify the air at 4L and up
What position is the patient in with nasal cannula?`
fowlers position
Which way should the prongs of the nasal cannula face?
downward and fit over the ears and secured under the skin
What do we assess for a patient on nasal cannula?
respiratory/skin status wherever the cannula meets skin
At what FIO2 level and flow rate do we use the simple mask?
FIO2 higher than 50%
flowrate of 6-12L
How is the simple mask applied?
snugly over mouth and nose and secure in place with strap
What is assessed on a patient with the simple mask?
respiratory and skin status where the mask was
What FIO2 and flowrate is the partial and non-breather mask applied?
FIO2 higher than 90%
flowrate of 10-15L
What percentage is room air?
21%
What is assessed on a patient with a partial and non breather mask?
respiratory and skin status where the mask was
What is the procedure for the incentive spirometer?
Set scale to volume level to be attained with each breath
Explain to patient how to place mouthpiece
Instruct patient to exhale
Instruct patient to seal lips around mouthpiece and inhale slowly and deeply while attempting to reach goal on scale.
Instruct patient to hold breath for 3 to 5 seconds and exhale slowly
Instruct patient to repeat 9 times and end with 2 coughs
