Procedure in which a tube is inserted into the patients bladder via the urethra
Allows urine to drain freely from bladder for collection

Relieve urinary retention
Monitor urine output in critically ill patients
Collect uncontaminated urine for diagnosis

When is a catheter contraindicated:
A
Prostatitis
Urethral injury

Complications:
A
Infection - 5% develop bladder bacteraemia
Bladder spasm
