Color
Report as Straw/Pale (little or no color) Yellow, or Amber (slightly red/orange)
Clarity
Report as Clear, Hazy, Cloudy, (Turbidity refers to cloudiness)
Glucose
Detects sugar, could indicate diabetes
Protein
May indicate kidney disease, UTI or may be due to non-pathological reasons (ie. Pregnancy, excessive exercise, or trauma to kidneys)
Ketones
By-products of fat metabolism. May be present with diabete, Dehydration, Dieting, or Starvation
Bilirubin
May indicate liver damage or disease, cardiac dysfunction, or spleen disorders.
Urobilinogen
Used to assess the same conditions as bilirubin. Tests are done together to confirm results.
Blood
May indicate UTI, positive result could also indicate kidney damage, or patient is on menstrual cycle.
Nitrite
a by product of bacterial reproduction. Presence = positive of a UTI
Leukocytes
White blood cells appear with a UTI or renal infections.
pH (potential hydrogen)
Measures acidity or alkalinity of urine. Normal range is 4.6-8.0
Specific gravity
Concentration of urine. Normal range is 1.002 - 1.028
Instructions for Clean Catch Midstream Urine Collection
Patient is given a towelette and a urine specimen cup to collect a sample of urine.
1. Unscrew the lid of the urine specimen cup. Place the lid lip-up on the counter. To avoid contamination do not touch the inside of the cup or lid.
2. Cleanse with the towlete as follows:
- Male : Wipe the head (end ) of the penis in a single motion with the towelette. If you have not been circumcised, hold the foreskin back before cleansing and continue holding back while collection the specimen.
- Female : Separate the labia, which are the folds of skin on either side of the area from which you urinate. Wipe the inner folds of skin from front to back in a single motion with the towelette. Keep labia separated while collecting urine sample.
3. Urinate a little bit first into the toilet.
4. Place the collection cup under the stream of urine and continue to urinate into the cup.
5. Replace the lid on the cup, and tighten the lid securely.
6. Give the specimen to the staff.
